05-11OCT09 - Old Mystic, CT

Monday, 05OCT, we arrived at Seaport RV Campground in Old Mystic, CT. This is the same one we used on our first RV trip in 2004, when Dan retired from the USCG and attended his thirtieth year reunion/homecoming for the greatest class (ie the class of 1974) to graduate from the USCG Academy located in New London, CT (more on this year’s reunion in the next BLOG entry)! Corrie let it be known that she only wanted to eat hot lobster rolls at every available opportunity. So we immediately headed to Captain Scott’s in New London for hot lobster roll, lobster bisque, clam chowder & whole belly clams. Then it was off to Foxwood Casino, supposedly the largest in the USA (world?), where the gambling gods were good to us.

Tuesday it was off on a walkabout in Mystic, CT, where it was “hot & clammy” (get it?); where of course we had to have a slice of pizza at Mystic Pizza, site of the movie “Mystic Pizza”. Unbelievably Dan learned Corrie never saw the movie, even though it supposedly the greatest girl flick of all time.

Then it was off for another walkabout in the extremely small village of Noank, CT, where we learned that “Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough” was closed until the weekend.
The next day, Wednesday, Dan headed to Submarine Museum outside sub base in Groton, CT. Not only is this a fantastic museum, but you can also take tours of the first nuclear submarine, the NAUTILUS (SSN 571). If you have any interest at all in the “silent service”, then you have to check out this free museum. Dinner was at Flanders Fish Market in East Lyme for more lobster rolls and delicious fish dinners.

Eventually we made it back to Abbotts on Friday with Jim Van Sice, Dan’s best friend from the Academy, for more lobster rolls, as well as steamed clams & mussels. Then Jim introduced us to the Daniel Packer Inne & Pub in Mystic for some olde fashioned Ale & Grog. The rest of the week and weekend was filled with Homecoming/Reunion activities detailed in the following BLOG entry.

Trivia – What is oldest collegiate competition in USA? What was unusual about the nuclear sub TRITON (think 2)? How many Medal of Honor are there? Who succeeded Hitler before the total occupation of Germany by the Allied armies?
