02OCT09 - Campbell, NY (corning, ny)

Today, Friday, we decided on a short drive, to arrive early in Corning, NY, and sightsee for the day. As you may guess from the name of the town, it is home to Corning Glass Company, and is the site of the Corning Glass Museum. After setting up camp we headed straight to the museum, which we highly recommend should you ever be in the area. We were fortunate to catch the afternoon docent tour, and were truly amazed at what you can create with glass. Basically by taking the basic “recipe” for glass and adding varying quantities of almost any element from the periodic table, you can get different colors and/or different properties.

One third of the museum is dedicated to glass art work, one third to the history & technological uses of glass (ie beer bottles, TV tubes, fiber optics, etc), and one third to shopping among glassware and art from around the world. Right next door is workshop that trains future glass artisans, and where world famous artists sometimes reside and have exhibits. For an extra fee you can learn the fundamentals of glass work and make an actual glass ornament. Don’t worry if you have no talent, the docents make sure everyone produces a beautiful object.

The next day Dan headed back to the museum to see the Frederick Carver exhibit, who started the Steuben Glass Works, owned at one time by Corning. Meanwhile Corrie headed downtown to check out the factory outlet.
Trivia – what is the connection between the Depression and fiberglass?
