As they say it is time to pay the piper, or in this case finally get the BLOG really started and hopefully make it of interest to those who care to check in and read it from time-to time. The last four days seem to alternate between periods of hectic activity, and periods of veg’ing-out. We are not sure we have reached the point of being full time RV’ers but the list of things to tie up the loose ends of our home owners life, gets whittled down each day.
Forgot to mention in our BLOG entry for the Fourth of July how the Nation’s birthday was celebrated here in Kerrville. It seems that since the ground was so wet and no one could guarantee no night time lightning, that Kerrville postponed the fireworks until Sunday the 8th. But since the individual citizen can only buy fireworks up until the Fourth, and must shoot them off by the Fourth, we were treated to small time firework displays all around the RV park. Seems some of the locals were camped out at fireworks stand right across the street and would run into the store whenever their supply ran low to reload. Thankfully, the stand finally closed down at 10 PM.
Thursday morning Corrie awoke to find the floor of the RV overrun with “sugar” ants, or piss ants as the locals call them. Seems that the ground is so wet, that the ants look for high and dry ground. Once one of them finds such a place, they immediately tell all their friends to come join the party! Being in an RV there are many points of entry; electrical power cord, cable TV cord, water hose, tires, bikes leaning against the RV, tree branches touching the RV, etc. So the rest of the morning was spent doing battle with the ants. At this point, after several days we are winning the battle, but still find small pockets of resistance to mop-up. The rest of Thursday was spent finding storage units for the remainder of our household goods that arrives Friday, and shopping.
Friday our household goods arrived. Dan recommended to the driver of the semi that he might want to walk into the storage facility to insure he could drive into it, and get out. But the driver decided to just to go for it. It was close but he had one or two inches to spare! Dan’s brother-in-law, Tim, came on down to help out and in about three hours they had it all in the two storage units we had rented. After a long, hot, morning of physical exertion it was off to the Guadalupe River Café for some pretty good oyster and shrimp PoBoys. The rest of the day (and night was spent recuperating.
Saturday was the first day with no rain, and mostly sunshine. Dan’s sister, Sharon, and Corrie hung around the RV park pool, while Dan and Tim did some small carpentry projects around Tim and Sharon’s house. That evening was the RV park’s Fourth of July celebration. The event consisted of free food and drink (hotdogs, chili, sauerkraut, chips, sodas and beer). The best part (even beyond free food and drink) was the entertainment. First up was the Horse Eagle Dancers. This was three Lakota brothers who are trying to keep alive the traditional Lakota dances and honor the Creator as their ancestors did. The rest of the evening was spent listening and dancing to the sound of Sol Patch, excellent band covering songs from Freddy Fender, Del Shannon, Van Morrison, etc. In fact the female vocalist was voted best female vocalist in Texas Hill Country. Note: local FM country station, KRVL 94.3, plays a different style of country music and refers to Nashville as Trashville.

Since Sunday is a day of rest, we decided to do nothing much and have Sunday afternoon dinner with Tim, Sharon and Dan Sr. Corrie threw together a big pan of lasagna that needed baking at the house. Since Dan was elected to hold it in his lap on the drive up, he ended up wearing some of it before final cooking. Fortunately, it tasted as good as it looked. It is hard to believe that we have been here five days, and must start planning our departure, but we need to travel north to Canada fairly soon!
Kerrville Trivia: 1) What famous Texas Grocery Store chain started in Kerrville (think last name of Butt)? 2) What general aviation aircraft company is located in Kerrville (think MAC)?
