Tuesday morning, 01AUG, we fired up the RV & headed to the
Staysail RV Park in Oak Harbor, WA, that we last stayed at May 2016
w/sister-in-law Elaine. Meanwhile
Rebecca, grandkids (Jaxson & Mason) & Gracie the dog followed in their
car. This was just going to be a short
“camping” trip, where Rebecca & kids slept in a tent next to the RV. The RV park is not very scenic, but it’s a
short drive & no reservations needed.
That evening was dinner at one of our favorites, Seabolt’s Smokehouse; followed
by the first of many walks on the beach & endless searching for beach
glass.
Wednesday morning it was off to North Beach at Deception Pass
State Park for more hunting of beach glass.
Next we visited the Park’s Cranberry Lake where the grandkids spent many
hours in the water. Then we drove to the
beach at Fort Ebey State Park for a brief visit; before returning to camp for a
hotdog dinner. Tomorrow morning we
return to the house & record heat in the Seattle area.
Monday, 07AUG, was Dan’s birthday; & he opted for lunch at
Cheesemongers Table in Edmonds rather than a going out for a birthday
dinner. Our last visit to this
establishment was 16AUG2013, & we still highly recommend it. Seattle still enjoying(?) record heat &
tied the record for continuous number of rainless days.
Tuesday, 08AUG, morning it was into Seattle Center for the
benefit of the grandkids. First stop was
the kids playground, known as Artists at Play.
See our BLOG for AUG last year for our first visit to this play
structure & its unique design features.
Thankfully we arrived early, & left when it got too crowded.
Artists at Play, an
imaginative, artists-created playground offering active, FREE FUN for all ages
is OPEN in Next 50 Plaza, located between the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) and
Seattle Center Armory, just north of the Monorail station.
A 30-foot Climbing
Tower, recommended for children ages 5 to 12, joins an inviting Labyrinth with
a Rebus at its center, human-powered ADA-accessible Carousel, child-inspired
musical instruments, listening stations, sound swings, play mounds and
"story lines" to offer child-friendly FUN in keeping with the mission
and purpose of Seattle Center.
From
there it was off to the International Fountain, which due to more record heat
was being heavily used. Turns out we
were at the Center almost a year ago (see below BLOG link) & noticed a
large number people on hand for the DOTA2 (Defense of the Ancients) world
championships, with teams from around the world competing for the $10M (plus)
first prize. Once again the competition
was taking place; & as last year, you could watch the competition outside
on gigantic screens for free, or pay to watch the live competition inside Key
Arena.
Then it was off to Madison Park Playground & Beach on the shores
of Lake Washington, before heading back to Sultan exhausted.
Friday, 11AUG, we all attended the 13th Coast Guard District’s
celebration of Coast Guard Day at Lord Hill Farm event center. Coast Guard Day actually occurs on the fourth
of August, but for some reason the 13th CG District chose to celebrate a week
later, & on a work day? We have to
say it was an excellent event & well organized. There were numerous activities for the kids –
putt/putt golf, giant water slide, bounce houses, sack races, tug-o-war,
etc. Also, the food serving areas were
large, well organized, & plenty of food; so no waiting in line to eat. A very good time, we’ll be back!
Sunday, 13AUG, while working on a project Dan severely cut his right
pinky finger down to the bone (of course this is where Dan received medical
treatment last month). So it was off to
the ER & six stichesL One good thing
since it was Sunday evening & no one in the ER.
Sunday, 27AUG, Dan goes back to the ER & gets the stitches
outJ Later that day Dan, Rebecca, Jaxson &
Mason head toward Everett to meet brother Shawn & wife Cindie to celebrate
Shawn’s birthday. Unfortunately Corrie wasn’t
feeling well & couldn’t go to Shawn’s B-day. A very good time, but Shawn didn’t appreciate
the restaurant staff singing him happy birthday while he wore a sombrero.
Monday AM, 28AUG, around lunch, Dan, Rebecca, Jaxson & Mason
headed to the Evergreen State Fair.
Although not THE state fair, it is still very, very, big & runs for
over two weeks. Although it was a long,
hot day, it was still a fun time (especially for the grandkids).
August ended by continuing & breaking the record for most 70
degree days in any Seattle summer; & as being the driest August on record! NOTE – probably time to admit we are not full
timers anymore? Since our return we have
been here for five months and now have an official address/mail box on the road,
we now get garbage pick-up every week, & cable being installed. And we are not even sure when we will hit the
road again?
