01-27MAY15 Sultan, WA

The month of May was almost a repeat of April.  Mostly work & gardening around the house property, while preparing the RV for a trip to the “Top of the World Highway” (more on that in future BLOG(s))?

The two “unique” events of the month were:

1) Sunday, Mother’s Day, 10MAY, we head into Seattle to see “Jacques Brel is Alive & Well in Paris” at the ACT Theatre (aka A Contemporary Theatre).  Where we last saw “An Evening With Groucho” (see below BLOG link).  As the playbill says:

“Widely considered one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived, Jacques Brel was born in Brussels in 1929.  In 1953, he released his first record, a 78 with two songs backed by an accordion band.  The release went largely unnoticed, except by the director of a famous Parisian nightclub.  Brel went to the “City of Lights” to perform some of his songs in the cabarets and music halls and the following year settled there permanently.  In 1957, with the release of “Quand on a que L’amour” (“If We Only Have Love”), the songwriter began his legendary ascent.  The song was wildly successful, and that some year, he released an American debut.  The next few years saw Brel’s output increase exponentially with the release of dozens of albums and singles.  Interpretations of Brel’s songs by such diverse as Frank Sinatra, the Kingston Trio, Ray Charles, Petula Clark, Barry Manilow and even David Bowie were recorded.  Brel made his final album in 1977, “Les Marquises”, which sold over two million copies.  The following year Brel died of cancer.  He is buried on the island of Hiva-Oa, in the Marquesas Islands, where in 1973 he had retired to the simple, tropical life of Gauguin.”

There was no problems w/traffic so we got there early & had a short walk about.  First stop was for a crepe at a street stand we discovered last year; & then window shopping down to the Westlake food court.  The show consists of three male & two female singers singing most of Brels “hits” with different staging and/or costumes for each song.  Most songs are solos, some are duets & some are all five together.  Dan thought the show was excellent – especially the song NEXT; Corrie thought it was “different”.

What was special about NEXT?  Well for those that really know Dan, know he has different taste in Rock & Roll & a very large LP & CD collect.  One of the artists he has every album for is Alex Harvey (aka The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, or SAHB).  One of his favorite songs by Alex is NEXT.  Dan always assumed NEXT was by ALEX; but no, it was by Brel!  As soon as the song started Dan recognized the lyrics & started singing along (much to Corrie’s surprise).  The song deals with a brothel truck “...supplied by the Army free of charge.”  For more details, Dan recommends you check Alex’s video on You Tube!

2) On the 16th of May we headed into Seattle to visit a friend of ours that Dan served with in the Coast Guard, Gary Boyer (see below BLOG about our last visit with Gary.  Gary has a home on Magnolia (one of the many hills of Seattle) that he purchased over forty years ago, with fantastic views.  Luckily he held onto the house throughout his Coast Guard career!  Probably the only problem he had during that time, was allowing Dan & friends to be renters?  An excellent time; once again proving time spent with friends & family are the best!

Otherwise the month consisted of:

>exercising at the Y; & gardening for Corrie

>Dan working on RV; & volunteering for Habitat for Humanity
>Corrie laying river rocks in yard

>Dan making a “stand” for a large, heavy wind chime Corrie’s brother, Ed, made for us out of a steel diving tank (the sketch is what Corrie wanted, the pic is what Dan built)

>Dan finally placing a real street address sign at foot of driveway

>Dan makes six foot by sixteen foot raised garden bed for Corrie; Corrie uses trailer to get garden soil to fill it with

>drop RV off at RV dealer to have TV antenna fixed
>Dan makes four purchases off internet for electric/remote control gate opener to install on new gate & fence installed last month; four items needed were – hydraulic actuator w/control panel, lock to actually lock gate in closed position; intercom system to call house; & solar power panel; then it was many days & hours, & part runs, to get working

>washing the RV for upcoming trip
>making another run with trailer to pick up more rock (& 2 free rose bushes) at Bob & Patti’s (see last month's BLOG)

>Dan dealing w/major computer virus on Memorial Day weekend, when our computer guy was closed
>changing oil/filter on Toad for trip
>breaking the corian dining table in RV while loading the RV
>etc, etc, etc, etc, etc!!!

01-30APR15 - Sultan, WA

Since our plans are to be RV’ing in June & July (more details in next BLOG), we needed to accomplish a “normal” summers activities around the property in the next two months; not spread out over summer/fall as is our normal routine.  So April ended up being a constant string of chores centered around the house & property:

>almost constant mowing, gardening & landscaping by Corrie
>Dan installs a USB charging outlet in kitchen island

>Corrie starts installing river rock we got from Bob & Pattie (see previous BLOG)

>Dan applies protective primer & paint to trailer walls he made last month

>Dan finishes two small sections of garage walls & doors; & sets up a dedicated spot for all our recyclables (since we have no garbage service)

>Easter Sunday, 05APR, at supper time we see big coyote calmly walking thru yard

>Dan making dramatic style change in his footwear, from the “tennie” he has worn for decades

>Dan makes a couple of Harbor Freight run & gets a few “toys” for his shop & work bench

>Dan finalizes & pays taxes
>having sixty feet of cyclone fencing with a fourteen foot gate installed across our drive way to increase security & keep the neighbors cows out

>battling invasive blackberries & holly bushes/trees
>Toad maintenance in preparation for upcoming trip
>routine dental & medical appointments
>etc, etc, etc

During all this Corrie found time to routinely attend exercise classes at The Y, and Dan volunteered once a week with Habitat for Humanity.  Also on 17APR, Dan’s brother Shawn & wife Cindie come by for an afternoon of reminiscing & BBQ dinner, which allowed us to present them with a wedding gift.

And there were two “special events” during the month:

Thursday, 02APR, Dan headed into Seattle to the Museum Of History And Industry (aka MOHAI) because admission is free on the first Thursday of each month.  (see below BLOG for more on MOHAI; & Dan’s last visit & history w/MOHAI)  This is a new facility & location for MOHAI.  Although it is a much better facility, it is not a big improvement over its previous location.  The building is much bigger, but the number of exhibits is only slightly larger & pretty much what they had before; & parking is expensive, not free.  Although entry was free on the first Thursday, you still must pay for any special exhibit – which this time was “American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition”.

Sunday, 26APR, we headed into Seattle Center for the Pompeii exhibit at the Pacific Science Center.  It was a good exhibit, but in our opinion not as good as the King Tut exhibit we viewed in 2012 (see below BLOG link).  But since we probably will never make it to Italy & this was the last time the artifacts would be in the USA, it was still worthwhile.  After that we had a short walkabout of the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festal that was going on at same time in the Seattle Center.  Last stop of the day was the Capitol Hill Market on Broadway.

14-31MAR15 - Sultan, WA

Saturday, 14MAR, was a late morning start back to Sultan, WA.  Although this was a record dry winter in the Pacific NW; it appears we have brought the rain with us, because we experienced heavy rain once we crossed over Snoqualmie Pass.  In fact, this winter was so mild, that the ski areas are already shut down & they lost about 50% of their season due to lack of snow.  After our arrival in Sultan we spent rest of day emptying the RV & re-occupying house.

We awoke Sunday morning to a record rainfall ever recorded for 15MAR & the 3rd wettest day in March ever – welcome home!!!  Even in the rain, Corrie starts gardening & clearing the yard/property.  Although it was an extremely mild/dry winter for Seattle area, there must have been some strong winds because many branches & small trees are down.  Dan continues emptying the RV & assembling one of his “toys” he purchased back in September 2014, while in Canada; & we have carried in the RV for six months!

On 20MAR, in the late afternoon we headed to Redmond’s Marymoor Park for the Cirque du Soleil show KURIOS.  This show was one of the best Cirque shows we have seen; much better than one we saw in November, in New Orleans!  The costumes & staging were unique even for a Cirque show, but several of the acts stood out:  1) a group of acrobats are sitting around a dinner table & start stacking chairs on the table higher & higher w/one acrobat always balanced on the top chair; BUT another group of acrobats are suspended high up on the ceiling mirroring the group below, & they starting stacking their chairs downward until the two acrobats meet in the middle & pass the salt & pepper!  2) three performers only use their fingers, hands & small props to recreate famous scenes; these scenes are projected up on to large screens & were mesmerizing!  3) a guy with nothing but Yo-Yo’s performed tricks that we still think were impossible.

Another unique aspect, was they had a large “swinging” bridge that stretched from backstage all the way to the front row of the audience.  We noticed that every few minutes before the show, audience members would get to backstage & then walk across the bridge to their seats?  We assumed these customers had paid extra for the VIP tickets?  But Corrie asked one of the ushers & found out anyone could do it by just asking!  So naturally we had to do itJ!

Sunday, 22MAR, we headed over to Dan brother Shawn & Cindie’s for a visit & late lunch.  Turns out not much has changed in their life other than they are now married & have bought their own house!

One thing we planned on doing different this year, is to start buying gardening materials (mulch, beauty bark, etc) in bulk; rather than the small bags sold at the big box stores.  To do this Dan started modifying the flatbed trailer we purchased back 2012 to move our furniture out of storage, by adding plywood walls that can hold five cubic yards.  It was a good thing he did this, because his cousin Bob called & asked if we wanted any rocks as we discussed in our last visit of August 2014.  So on Friday, 27MAR, we headed over to Bob & Patties to get some “free” rock.  Even though a small amount of rock, it was definitely easier to load with a tractor, than to unload by shovel!

The remainder of the March was spent:

>Corrie constantly gardening between mowing & thatching sessions
>Dan trouble shooting why photo electric eyes on three outside porch lights stopped working?
>preparing homemade jerky & smoked salmon
>cleaning out the annual mess made by mice & rats in the old barn
>semi-annual visit to dentist, where Dan is told he now needs a “mouth guard” at night because he supposedly grinds his teeth in his sleep?
>Corrie starts a raspberry “patch” with starters from the neighbor
>Doctor visits
>etc
