01-28FEB26 - Sultan, WA

Tuesday, 03FEB,  Dan takes RV to Mercedes in Lynnwood; but mechanic didn’t show up for work.  Drive RV back home and get back to cleaning barn after stopping working on it last September.

Wednesday Dan hook’s up Fiesta to RV and heads back to Mercedes dealer in Lynnwood.  He is towing the Toad because if Mercedes needs the RV overnight, then Dan will disconnect the Toad and leave RV at dealership.  That way he can catch Edmonds ferry and drive to daughter Rebecca’s house and be there for grandson Jaxson’s wrestling match that afternoon.  Jaxson is doing quite well on the Middle School “varsity” team.  He has won four matches already and is team Captain (in fact he received recognition from school as athlete of the month).

In this modern cell phone age, with everything streamed live; the award was presented on the school’s website and broadcast live at 0730.  But you could log on any time later and watch the tape.  Unfortunately Jaxson lost his match (because IMO the ref instantly said he was pinned before he could attempt to make an escape☹ Back to the house to eat, and then everyone but Jaxson played UNO.

Thursday mid-morning Dan heads to Kingston Ferry and the drive home.  Around 2PM Dan loads our two leather armchairs (both have cheap leather that has split and flaked off)) onto truck to give them away to someone in Gold Bar.  Although very solid chairs; no one will take them as donations if they need any work.  We have offered them for free for six months on facebook.

Friday, 06FEB, Dan mows our big front lawn for the first time of the new year (sunshine today, rain to return tomorrow).  Saturday wake up to steady rain, right before lunch we head to Everett to see Mason’s soccer game.  Meet Rebecca there and endure strong rain and winds throughout the game (probably worse weather to watch soccer we have experienced in past two years).  Mason team wins and we head home to dry out.

Sunday (Super Bowl) not much done just stay inside out of the rain and watch Sea Hawks destroy Patriots.  While eating healthy (wings, charcuterie, cheeses, chips/crackers/dips, etc).  Monday rain stops.  Run to Mercedes in Lynnwood.  They can’t figure out what the issue with tranny is.  Next option is drop transmission and disassemble (we will pass for now); take RV home.

Tuesday, 10FEB, great weather; Dan continues work on cleaning out old barn; then mows back acreage in way of septic field.  Wednesday great weather; Corrie works on garden/landscaping; Dan works on indoor RV parking space and then on old barn clearing debris.

Thursday, 12FEB, another great day.  Corrie works on outdoor chores.  Dan finally finishes clearing all the debris that has accumulated over fifteen years in the old barn.  He has sorted out everything into trash, donation, and keeping.  One mistake he has made over the years is that any scrap lumber left over from our many past projects has been haphazardly thrown into one of the stalls and never touched.  Now he has divided into three categories – not usable but can be burned safely in fire circle; not usable and cannot be burned; and usable and needs a new home.  Last part of project was safely removing (can you say N-95 masks?) all the vermin feces, vermin nests, cobwebs, and fifteen years dust/dirt.

Friday AM (daughter Rebecca’s b-day) we catch a morning Edmonds ferry to Kingston and then on to Rebecca, Raymond and grandson’s house to celebrate.  First thing we notice is a tree fort Jaxson has been building with Mason and a neighbor boy.  Certainly an interesting design🙃?

  

That evening we all (except grandson Mason who is under the weather) head to Captain Crab restaurant for b-day dinner.  Cajun style boiled seafood; very messy.  Then back to the house for 3 games of UNO.

Saturday (valentines day) off to Costco to take advantage of their new early entrance hour for executive members.  So NICE to get fuel, shop and out of there in less than hour😊  Then we tried Bean Hill Bakery for coffee and pastry.  New business in small strip mall, highly recommended.  Back to house and off to Jaxson’s indoor soccer game.  Then back to their home to do various things before playing UNO.

Sunday AM, 15FEB, pack up truck and catch Kingston ferry and drive home, just in time for lunch.  Good weather, so do some outdoor chores.  Monday and Tuesday, cold dreary days; Dan moves scrap wood that had accumulated in RV garage over years to old barn to have all our leftover lumber in one location.  Corrie works in yard.

19FEB, Thursday early morning snow flurries, but immediately melts on the ground.  Snow flurries continue throughout morning to noon, but nothing stays on the ground.  Corrie runs errands, Dan starts taking pictures of “stuff” in shop/RV garage to sell or donate.  Friday Corrie does major shopping while Dan continues taking photos of tools no longer needed.  If tool needed in future, he’ll rent.  Rocket gets groomed.

Tuesday 24FEB, Corrie has girl’s day out with Jan Formisano.  Dan goes to Steven Pass Ski Area.  First time back on the slopes in two years.  Dan was out of shape, rusty and snow was terrible.  Three runs and done, back to the house.  Then posts “stuff” on facebook to sell as we downsize.

Wednesday mostly errands and Dan mows front lawn for second time.  Ships half his engineering books off to internet business to be resold.  Several hundred dollars in books, sold for $16, and free shipping.

Thursday AM Dan catches ferry to Kingston, WA, to go to grandson Jaxson’s afternoon wrestling match.  After match everyone but Jaxson goes to Skipper’s Seafood and Chowder House for dinner (only five left in the USA).  Why Skippers?  Because Dan was driving the grand boys around Silverdale and noted that he hadn’t seen a Skippers in decades.  Mason then told parents – that the family should take OPA to Skippers, on one of Dan’s many visits.  Rebecca, Raymond, and Mason were the youngest customers.  Everyone else was as old as Dan🙃

Friday, 27FEB, AM Dan packs car and heads to Kingston ferry and home.  Not much done the rest of the month.

10-31JAN26 - Sultan, WA (completion of our interrupted RV trip🙃)

Saturday AM, 10JAN, start long drive in Toad back to house in Sultan, WA; over eight hours later pull into driveway in typical Seattle area winter rain☹ Then spend couple hours trying to figure out why gas stove won’t light; why water won’t come on; and which smoke alarm battery is dead and now beeping; etc.  Finally get the important things working and to bed.

Sunday busy, busy – going thru three months mail (almost all junk); cleaning up downed trees from wind storms that occurred; rescheduling medical; mowing small part of backyard to ease walking thru very wet tall grass; etc; etc.  Monday run lots of errands.  Tuesday Corrie works on veggie garden area.  Dan continues cleaning tree debris out of front yard area.  Wednesday sunny weather, Dan continues removing tree debris.  Verizon down apparently nationally.

Thursday Verizon internet back.  Progressive adjuster report on our RV is in – looks like tow truck damage caused RV issue?  So repair still not authorized until resolved; but shouldn’t be long.

Saturday, 17JAN, before lunch we head to Mukilteo, WA, to catch the ferry to Vashon Island to catch grandson Jaxson’s soccer game.  Great sunshine and views of Mt Baker and Glacier Peak from ferry.  At game we meet daughter Rebecca, and grandsons Jaxson & Mason who we haven’t seen for three months.  Lots’ of hugs.  After game back to ferry and home, again great mountain views.

Monday cold and sunny; not much done.  Dan mows frozen grass for first time in his life.  Tuesday medical visits or both of us; not much else done.

Wednesday, 21JAN, in the morning we get word from Progressive Insurance that our RV drive shaft damage will be covered.  Call to Mercedes Benz of Medford, OR, and they say repairs will be done end of work day tomorrow.  And the routine maintenance we wanted will also be done.  Quick packing, throw the bags and dog into the Fiesta and off we go.  Drive to Clackamas just outside of SE Portland and get a dog friendly room at Renaissance Inn (unfortunately dog friendly rooms are not friendly priced!!!)  Dan encounters almost hurricane force winds while walking for takeout at Taco Time (news says wind was gusty to 55mph plus).

Thursday AM on I5 South to Medford Mercedes.  Make stop at K&R Drive In, just off I-5 for great burgers and shakes.  There is no roadside advertising for this place, we took Exit 148 for Rice Hill looking for Subway, and there was K&R.  Turns out they take pride in being open all year even in terrible Pacific north west mountain weather and with no indoor seating or restrooms.  Then back on the road to MB in Medford.  Mercedes mechanic had RV out for test drive and paper work done by closing time 530PM.  Since we won’t drive at night, plug RV in and hope to hit the road tomorrow.

Friday AM discuss couple of issues with final bill with service representative.  Finally heading home on North I-5.  Again warning lights on dash intermittently come on and off for couple of short times on parts of the drive (but we film it this time to show to Mercedes).  Decide to stop short of Portland to avoid Friday afternoon bridge traffic-jam across Columbia River into Washington.  Then get up in morning and skirt around city on North I-205.  Check into RV park we stayed at once before South of Portland (Wilsonville, OR).  Great upscale dinner at Oswego Grill.

Saturday AM back on I-5/I-205 around Portland hoping to be home early afternoon.  Some heavy traffic by Olympia, thru Tacoma, and Renton “S” curves.  But we make good time and no warning lights on dash.  Park the RV in driveway, go inside and veg-out.

Sunday, 25JAN; not much done but unload RV.  Then Dan takes RV into Monroe to fill up propane tank.  For almost a month we have encountered below average temps as we traveled home (often near or below freezing).  So we used a lot of propane, and were almost on empty. 

On the trip we could have run our electric rooftop AC/heat pump for heat.  But around freezing it is not efficient and runs all night.  Yes, our RV spots for the night always include electricity in the cost.  But the best roof units are not quiet and the noise is annoying all night long.  And the RV still stays at 64 or so even with roof heat.  But the propane furnace quietly kicks on, easily heats to 68 and kicks off.  Much quieter and not running all night.  That evening we watch 🏈🏈SEAHAWKS beat the RAMS for NFC Championship and on to the Super Bowl🎇🎆

Monday starts with medical imagining tests for both of us, and doing stuff in the heated comfort of our house during continued freezing weather.  Tuesday Corrie has girl’s day out with Jan Formisano.  Dan spends morning finishing our list of “extra” expenses incurred while RV was at Medford Mercedes Benz, OR.  We are seeking reimbursement from Progressive.  To end the day Dan empties RV non-essentials from our three month trip. Thursday, 29JAN, Dan goes to bi-monthly lunch gatherings of CG Academy Classmates of the Class of 1974.  This luncheon was at Cheesecake Factory.

Saturday, last day of January, the Pitre family (daughter Rebecca, husband Raymond, and grandsons Jaxson & Mason) come by for a visit in the AM before Mason’s soccer team.  After a short visit we all head to Due Cucina Italian.  A straightforward counter-serve operation dishing up pasta & sides.  And then to Salt & Straw for “craft made” ice cream.  With full bellies, it was off to Mason’s soccer game.  After the game Pitre’s headed home to their home in Silverdale, and we to ours in Sultan.

01-09JAN26 - Various (stranded in medford, or)

New Year’s Day, Thursday, on the road early driving West I-40 to Ash Fork, AZ.  Pretty good day of driving, sixty MPH for 400 miles in 6.5 hours.  Discovered new gas stations starting to show up on interstates – called ONE 9 truck stops; name comes from CB-lingo Breaker 1-9 (ie Channel 19 on your CB radio).

These are new, smaller, stations owned by Pilot/Flying J.  Apparently aimed at smaller truck fleet owners who don’t benefit from full size truck plazas.  One 9 diesel prices are forty cents less (and in AZ if you fill up with diesel at car pump island you save eight cents more than at the already cheap semi -truck islands).  We will definitely keep an eye out for these stations down the road🙃  Spend the night at very small KOA in Arch Fork, AZ.

Friday on West I-40 to Barstow CA; enter into CA at Needles, CA, and stop to refuel – Big Mistake!!  Half the gas stations on the one “main” road are out of business.  And the two at end of main street have no room to maneuver and barely can handle cars, let alone RVs.  After couple of close calls with street traffic, got RV & Toad into a station to fill-up on diesel at $6.20 a gallon!!!☹️ 

Make it to Barstow and stop at Wally Mart for groceries.  GPS has wrong address because this is brand new store and maybe just opened?  Merchandise boxes everywhere, to be opened and shelved by new staff.  Very confusing layout compared to all other Walmarts, and the gas station still not done.

Then heading to another KOA for the night.  We come to sign saying road closed?  But no detour route signs?  Finally call KOA and ask road closed what now?  There answer is - go back to highway and to next exit and backtrack on closed road!  We ignore their directions and finally make it.

Interesting KOA, large, wide sites; but many sites have been subdivided in two.  One half for RV and car; and other half for fenced patio area.  Look to be for long, long, term rental.  Fingers crossed, because park is surrounded by off road area and these sites are rented by ORV owners☹️   But everyone well behaved and all quiet by 10PM.

Saturday AM short drive to Bakersfield, CA.  Steep descent thru Tehachapi Mountains during heavy downpour; setting up camp in rain no fun.  Park is a working orange grove (pick all u want).  Rain finally ends mid-afternoon and sunshine.

Dinner at Pyrenees Café serving Basque style meals.  Back in 07MAR2015, we ate Basque food at Wool Growers Restaurant, also in Bakersfield.  Pyrenees definitely a local bar hangout (the kinda local, dive bar, Dan and fellow Coasties hung out in back in the day).  In fact we thought this was a “wrong choice”, but waitress immediately directed us to entry to main/quieter dining room.  As their website says;  Bakersfield now boasts the largest collection of Basque restaurants in the United States, with the Pyrenees Cafe being a pillar amongst them. These establishments carry forward the traditions of their ancestors, offering a time-honored Basque food experience to their visitors. Customarily, meals at the Pyrenees Cafe are a multicourse feast, served family style at long trestle tables. Guests typically start with the 'set-up,' a generous spread of bread, soup, beans, salsa, pickled tongue, vegetables, french fries, and spaghetti. The hearty entrees include lamb, chicken, and seafood, or the special entrée of the evening, epitomizing the rich culinary culture of the Basque people.

Corrie went with the butter nut squash ravioli and Dan had oxtail stew.  Good food; with too many leftovers.  Then back to RV to watch Seahawks beat San Fran.

Meanwhile, from 01- 04, January, the Pitre’s (daughter Rebecca, husband Raymond, Grandsons Jaxson & Mason) started the new year by skiing and boarding at Mt Hood, OR.  While in Oregon they also visited the last remaining BlockBuster in the USA/World.

Sunday 04JAN (grandson Jaxson’s b-day) we are back on the road and soon on North I-5 which we will drive all the way to Seattle, and home.  We soon run into heavy rain and traffic (not fun).  Original plan was to stop south of Sacramento; but rain forecasted again for tomorrow.  So we pushed thru to Woodlawn, CA, and found a spot at Yolo County Fairgrounds RV (where we spent one night back in MAR2015).

Monday wake-up to no rain and mild weather; back on North I-5 soon run into heavy wind and rain☹️  Check of National Weather Service shows same forecasts for next two to three days over north I-5 corridor in CA, into Oregon.  And in addition, the Cascades around Mount Shasta will have wind gusts from 45 to 60 mph! 

Now what do we do??  Dan remembered fairly new casino right off I5, near Redding, CA, that had nice RV park.  Found the address and we made reservation.  Checked into Rolling Hills Casino RV Park, Corning, CA, waiting for better weather.  Once again we discovered our “players cards” from years ago are no longer recognized by casino’s present operating software.  And two more new cards added to our collection.  Make small contribution to gods’ of chance and back to RV to do laundry.

Tuesday no rain and overcast; decide to do some sightseeing and shopping.  First stop was a store we visited way back 11APR2009 called the Olive Pit.  A business devoted to many food items (and some kitchen utensils) all based on locally grown olives (or olive wood).  Dozens and dozens of different stuffed olives; oils, jams, jellies, dips, sauces, etc.  This time Dan got a jar of chipotle stuffed olives; then we had lunch in their café.  Mostly burgers and sandwiches, but their milkshakes either have olive oil or balsamic vinegar in them.  Dan tried the lemon shake with olive oil.  Quick stop for groceries; then off to find a roadside attraction of world’s largest olive, not impressive.

Back in the Toad to Sierra Nevada Cheese Co in Willows, CA.  With all the road closures in the area, Dan called earlier and asked if they were open?  They said yes and no problems with roads.  THEY LIED!  Route on car GPS took us to closed roads; google GPS on phone said roads blocked and gave detour.  Detour was dirt roads through acres and acres of olive groves; no signage but clear blue lines on phone.  Eventually we lost traction because of slickness of dirt/clay road.  Luckily we got car turned around and called it a day; NO cheese☹

Back to RV to recuperate from our adventure and take shower.  Best showers we have run into while RV’ing.  You go to casino clubhouse you get basket with towel, wash cloth, shampoo, rinse, body gel and private room with instant hot water.  After shower off to the casino to donate more money.

Wednesday, 07JAN, mostly spent on prep’ing for tomorrow’s departure.  First thing done is to get replacement bulb for RV low beam light.  Failed a week ago and doing daylight driving no hurry to fix.  Now going into mountains with snow possible, time to fix;.  While in town Dan also gets groceries and goes back to Olive Pit store.  Not to get more olive stuff but to get Sierra Nevada Cheese we failed to get yesterday (Olive Pit carries a few of their cheeses).  Then laundry, dumping tanks and readying Toad & RV; dinner at Casino’s “Whiskey Wednesday” night (no whiskey consumed).

Thursday AM fuel RV at casino gas station and hit North I-5.  About an hour into drive what appears to be red problem light that says “brake” starts flickering on tach dial; and another light saying “park brake” on speedo?  Call to MB USA connects us to tech support.  They will not discuss situation, and we make safety decision to have tow truck take RV to nearest MB dealer (Medford, OR!!)

Tow truck shows up and starts hooking up RV and we (plus rocket) jump in toad and drive straight to MB of Medford.  Two hour drive thru mountains of north California; get to MB dealership.  Go out to get something to eat; back to MB and tow truck is there backing RV into one of the dealership’s dedicated RV spots.  Because of large numbers of RVs based on Mercedes Sprinter Chassis -  more and more dealerships are adding RV hook-ups for electric, water and even sewage for RV’ers stuck while diagnostics/repairs being made.

Friday AM head into Service reception area; technician makes initial inspection of underside of RV.  Then comes into reception and delivers BAD news.  Appears the drive shaft flange to differential connection is badly damaged; along with support bracket for drive shaft; damaged wiring harness & e-brake cable.  Initial estimate is differential is sealed unit and entire differential needs replacing after new unit arrives from Germany!!!

After recovering from shock, its phone calls to our extended warranty insurance, and to our “auto insurance” for our RV.  Extended warranty won’t cover because damage not caused by failure of the differential.  It was caused by accident/casualty.  Call to Progressive and they open claim and will cover it under Comprehensive.  Give claim number to service department and learn that our differential not sealed, parts available in USA, and estimate is now $2.5K unless more damage found.

Parts probably here Monday; insurance adjuster here Wednesday.  Repairs done when Progressive claim check cut.  Plan now is to stuff Toad with all we need, drive back to our house and not stay in the RV in the parking lot.  We will secure RV in MB parking lot and drive back home to Sultan, WA, tomorrow.
